Which are you?
10.07.04 (9:36 am)   [edit]

I know. You're probably thinking, "Can't this guy write about anything other than politics?".  The fact of the matter is, we are at a crucial time in American history and it's weighing heavily on my heart and mind.  I want to do as much as possible to make sure we make the right decision for the future of this country, and more importantly, the world.  Often times we get caught up in the web of our own self-interest, forgetting that there are other people on this Earth besides us.  By saying "us" I mean whatever group you associate yourself with.  Some example traits that effect with what group we allign include gender, nationality, political affiliation, religion, hair color, shoe size....I think you know where I'm going with this.

To think that my self-interest supercedes your self-interest is rediculous.  I believe that global self-interest supercedes anyone's individual self-interest.  Call me a "bleeding heart" or some other conservative catch phrase, but that's what I believe.  Cooperation with parties other than "us" is essential if we are to improve our current global situation.

With the election heating up, there is great emphasis placed on labels such as "liberal" and "conservative".  The media draws a line telling you where you are supposed to stand based on what label you associate yourself with.  They tell you not to cross that line because those on the other side are evil, desperate, and just don't get it.  The truth is that liberals and conservatives need to get over the partisan bullshit and work together for the benefit of not "us", but generations to come.  I've felt for quite some time that the main difference between liberals and conservatives is essentially minute.  It boils down to the fabric of how they converse with each other.  A liberal would say, "I dissagree with you, but I can see why you feel the way you do".  A conservative would say, "I dissagree with you because you are wrong".  Which are you?

man's best friend.
06.13.04 (12:01 pm)   [edit]

here's a picture of my best friend, monty.

akron.
06.13.04 (9:03 am)   [edit]
just a quick thank you to everyone who came out to the show in akron last night. it was great seeing some old friends that we haven't seen in a while, as well as making a bunch of new friends. we promise we'll be back soon. btw, if you haven't heard of them already, check out waiting for evangeline . they are one of the best bands i've seen in a long time.

4 am Forever.
06.08.04 (10:07 am)   [edit]
it's four a.m.
forever or maybe just for now.
your sleep, as gentle and beautiful
as the rain against your window.

when i forget how to talk
    i'll sing midnight Texaco
    interstate love songs
        through stranded payphone screams
and dreams of one day leaving.

some songs need not be sung.

the morning after.
06.05.04 (7:26 am)   [edit]
went to the pub last night for their 1 yr anniversary. i must say that it's really nice to have a place like that right next door. up until now i've lived so many places that had no sense of community. it's nice to go somewhere and have people say "hi" or walk into a bar and the bartender knows exactly what you drink. if you're ever on the northside of pittsburgh, check out the monterey pub, although the $1 yuenglings will get the best of you and you will pay for them the next morning.

pimpin' my ride.
06.01.04 (9:20 am)   [edit]
this weekend i bought a bike. not a motorcycle, as my soon to be father-in-law's eyes lit up at the thought of us both cruising the countryside on twin hogs, donned with leather and rebel flag bandannas soaking the sweat from our brows. as much as that thought appeals to bud-light swillin', lynyrd skynyrd listnin' side of your's truly, i did not buy a motorcycle. i bought a bicycle.

the bicycle of choice is a huffy roadster, modled after (some say copied from...) the old school schwinn cruiser. this beauty comes equiped with only one gear, coaser brakes, chrome fenders and ooga horn. all killer...no filler.

this bike shaves a ton of time off of my comute to work (now at a spritely 6 mins) not to mention the cost of bus fare or the price of parking. forget rising gas prices...buy a bike.

le petit mort.
05.27.04 (10:01 am)   [edit]
after being told numerous times about the irregularity of my posts, i've decided to make a concious effort to update more frequently. consider this a new begining...a fresh start...le petit mort.

the bulk of my time over the last few weeks has been taken up by recording new songs. some solo...some leSonique. the last time michael came over we laid some sequencer tracks for "song of seperation" and "machines". after a ten hour session yesterday all of the guitars and bass are finished for "s.o.s." and i'm planing to start the vocal tracks this afternoon. this song is very different from anything we've ever done and i think it's a good indication of the direction we're headed. we've been receiving alot of positive criticsm from the kids at our last couple of shows, so hopefully you will like it. look for it soon, probably on our purevolume site.

on a side note, thanks to everyone who came out to the lovely recordings showcase last wednesday at clubcafe. it was a fun time and we are very glad to have been a part of it. if you missed it you can check out a review of the show at killerdulce.

thank you.
05.16.04 (8:46 am)   [edit]
thank you to everyone who came out to the show at the monterey pub last night. it was a great time. it's wierd, but last night was the first time in a long time that i actually had fun performing. maybe it was the relaxed atmosphere, maybe my frame of mind. thanks again.

just a guy and a guitar.
04.29.04 (7:54 am)   [edit]
so...what's been going on? michael and i have a couple of shows coming up. i'm kind of nervous about the pub show on the fifteenth. i reluctantly agreed to do a solo set before michael and i play as leSonique. it's been a while since i was alone up there and i'm hoping everything goes well. i'll probably end up doing some cool covers and some songs i wrote that are intended to be "just a guy and a guitar".

creatively, the machine is in motion. "song of seperation" is finished, while "pale moon", "escape" and "the feeling of breathing" are all on their way.

i'm also thinking about upgrading the studio for the recording of our full-length. The Leap Year was recorded entirely on 4-track analog tape. something tells me we'll need more for the full-length. so far the best bet looks like a 32 track pro-tools set up matched with an interface. i'm 99% sure i'm gonna do it, but i still have some questions that i need answered.

oh yeah...the brick patio and the main flowerbed are in and my baby grass is sprouting. can you smell the veggie burgers?

in pursuit of the ultimate "man-lawn".
04.20.04 (3:27 pm)   [edit]
there is a somewhat silent competition among the male human species. a competition that builds fences between neighbors and friends, and leaves perticularly odorous landmines that are inevitably removed with assistance from a plastic shopping bag and a paperclip on the nose. much like baseball, this game takes up most of the year (from about april to october) and fills it's player's weekends with countless hours of amusment and joy. this competition is the pursuit of the ultimate "man-lawn".

my friends...i've officially entered the game. this past weekend i began my journey to the land of scott's shade mix, brick patios and perenial bulbs. growing up, i never thought it would come to this. whenever my parents made me mow the lawn or pick dandylions out of the walkway i made a sacred vow to myself that someday i would never have to do such menial tasks. i guess growing up makes you appreciate such menial tasks. not only appreciate them, but enjoy them.

i do not intend for this topic to be a major reoccuring theme. i will, however, give periodic updates as to the progress of my "man-lawn" and as the moment of fruition draws near i will invite each and every one of you over for a barbeque. i'll supply the veggie-burgers...you bring the yuengling.

kitty-cats and tulips.
04.14.04 (6:29 am)   [edit]
so...what's been happening the last couple of days? the weekend was good. the easter bunny brought me the nicest gift he could have possibly brought...two new songs. both are very solid and different from my usual "sound". i've been making a concious effort to try and write from a different place than i have before. lyrically, i'd like to expound upon different themes and musically i'm trying to write so that michael's parts fit in perfectly. don't worry, the full-length will not be all kitty-cats and tulips. there will be plenty o' depressing leSonique to go around. it's gonna be pretty even down the middle...1/2 kitty-cats and tulips...1/2 cigarettes and whiskey.

i watched dubya's press conference last night. i don't know why i watched it...maybe because i thought i'd see or hear something new. this was not the case. yet again, dubya consistantly avoids answering any question that could be considered "threatening" to his administration. i just don't see any progress ever being made as long as this country is being led by an administration with these values. my conservative talk radio tells me everything will be fine as long as george II remains in office. i'm not sure that i believe them.

i quit.
04.09.04 (8:00 am)   [edit]
that's it. i quit. seriously. i quit. after witnessing the level of musicality i witnessed last night, i quit. i have never been so impressed with a musical performance before, save radiohead and the last time i saw elliott smith. jv and band were right on for every song...vocals pristine, guitars dynamic, bass driving and drums like a cinder-block to the head.

all this and jv is about the nicest guy you'll ever meet. it's very rare that you meet a true genuine person in this world, and the slice is one of those people. i guess i take back what i said about quitting. last night makes me want to strive for perfection....it's driving me to do better.

other than the show, the rest of the day was great too. met one of michael's friends (hey monica!) for stir-fry at this killer mongolian bbq place. all you can eat...absolutely killer. later, i also ran into some friends that i hadn't seen in a while. it's crazy, i can drive three hours away from home, to a completely different city and still run into people i know. i guess its a small world. walt disney told me that.

in like a lion, out like a lamb.
04.07.04 (11:26 am)   [edit]
it's finally nice outside. i can't explain to you how much the weather effects my mental state. yesterday it was cold, dark and gloomy and i felt like i could curl up into a ball and implode. today it's bright, sunny and crisp and feel like running a marathon. i guess seasonal affect disorder is the new ADD.

on the other hand, nice weather is like kryponite to me artistically. who feels like writing a song when they're happy? apparently michael does because he's been making up for my lack of inspiration. kudos. i shouldn't say lack of inspiration, because i have a few solid "leads" on a couple of songs.

tomorrow is JV in cleveland. i've been waiting for the chance to see him play live for a while now, and tomorrow is the day. if you're not familiar with JV, he's pretty much an audiological genius. the picture he paints with sound is unreal. check him out at johnvanderslice(dot)com. i haven't been on a road trip in quite a while, so i'm getting pretty geared up. michael knows a great vegetarian stir-fry place, so i guess the plan is to feast first and rock second. at least we have our priorities straight.

greetings and salutations.
04.05.04 (7:31 am)   [edit]
after checking out michael's blog, i decided that this weblog thing was a pretty cool idea. i can't promise you that i'll be responsible and post everyday, but i'll give it the old college try.

let me start off by introducing myself for those of you who don't know me. my name is jeffrey. i'm 25. i like candle-lit dinners and long romantic walks on the beach. i'm not kidding...i really do. i live in pittsburgh, slinging coffee by day and writing sad, acoustic guitar based songs by night. my friend michael and i have a little project we like to call leSonique. if you're interested, you can visit our website ( <---link to the left ) and listen to the noise we like to make. >
i hope this was an okay first post. i look forward to sharing with you.
